You Tubing Across the Universe (Part 1, Friday Night Download Review)

Last night, there was a new show on Channel 10 called "Friday Night Download" with hosts Mike Goldman, Bree Amer and Ryan "Frysie" Fitzgerald. If the names seem familiar to you as does the 7.30pm Friday time slot, you'd be right as the three hosts combine for Friday Night Live (FNL) during Big Brother.

I'd often say during BB that FNL is a modern version of the old TV Show "It's A Knockout" where ordinary people run up and down water soaked obstacle courses. However, Friday Night Download (FND?) is not meant to be like FNL if you believe the publicity.

Speaking of It's A Knockout, here's a clip that I found on You Tube which will show you about what it was about. After you watch the clip, try and tell me that FNL wasn't based on this!

If you believe the publicity, the show is about showing cool stuff from the web which probably means someone Googled You Tube. Now will the show feature something like "Charlie the Unicorn" that I was shown last night? (see below)

Or will the show feature people video blogging like Emmalina (that's her below, just in case you can't tell the difference between a woman and a unicorn) who posts videos like this on You Tube. For instance this particular video alone has had over 350,000 views. Now I can only dream about figures like that on a podcast! And who would make hate videos based on a You Tube video like this? And yes, the show did show a video blogger, a guy from the US who doesn't understand how we Australians like Vegemite and thinks that we are taking the mickey out of the US. Huh?

While I was writing this review, I had a look at the numbers of people who have viewed the "Charlie the Unicorn" clip above - 14 million viewers! That is just staggering! That's about one view for every Australian adult!

This show is an attempt to show people what you can find on the interweb but have the people on the interweb already seen it? Does the interweb convert to good TV? I wasn't going to watch it but my mum taped it for me so let's see what happens and if it will survive longer than Hugh Jackman's TV show the other night that got arsed after 2 episodes in the US and 1 here......

Basically having seen the show, it is FNL minus the games and the BB Housemates with videos from (presumably) You Tube added. You don't get to see the videos in TV quality - it is You Tube quality. And unlike You Tube, you can't see the videos in full screen mode. On a graphic background, you see the video on the left and in most videos you see the various reactions of the hosts on the right.

While it is an attempt to bring the interweb to TV, you could do the same without watching the hosts on You Tube. If you find the hosts annoying as I know some people do, you will not want to watch the show and do yourselves a favour, go to You Tube. I don't think that the show will last long if Channel 10 are fair dinkum in relation to ratings and content. And can someone tell me why they need a studio audience apart from making the hosts sound like they are funny? Some of the clips were funny, though.

It's car crash TV worse than any episode of BB.............
